2023: Labour Party chieftain tackles Melaye over assessment of Peter Obi

Former Spokesperson to Atiku Abubakar in the 2019 Presidential Election, Tim Ogwuru has described a statement credited the Sen. Dino Melaye asking Mr. Peter Obi, the Labour Party Presidential Candidate to wait for another four or eight years to join Presidential race as the height of political insensitivity and recklessness.
The Senator had in a viral video, published on his social media handle, asked Peter Obi to wait for his turn or for another four to eight years before he could declare his interest for the number one position in the country.
Reacting to Melaye’s statement, Ogwuru who is a chieftain of Labour Party lamented that by asking Obi to wait, the lawmaker is unequivocally telling Nigerian youths to wait for another four years for Universities to be reopened, to wait for four years to gain employment, tackle insecurity, fight hunger, pay regular salaries and pension and infrastructural development.
Speaking with New National Star Newspaper on Saturday, Ogwuru said, “This is an irresponsible talk and irresponsible commentary coming from a politically exposed individuals just like the earlier one from ex-gov. Babangida Aliyu saying that Peter Obi will have to wait.
“Somebody is saying something that is striking a note with Nigerians and you are asking Nigerians to wait for another five years or ten years.
“You are equally asking them to wait to eat for the next ten years, you are asking them to wait and be unemployed for the next five years, you are asking them to wait and not get their pensions and salaries for the next five years, you are asking them to wait and be kidnapped and killed for the next five years”.
He lamented that so many politicians have been taking Nigerians for granted and are yet to wake up to the reality that the electorate are tired of the status quo and empty promises of the current political class.
“The people who have been playing this kind of politics have been taking the electorate for a ride. The electorates in the country have woken up and unfortunately, some people who are pretending to be politicians, who are pretending not to be listening to Nigerians are still being irresponsible in their commentary that somebody like Peter Obi will have to wait for the next five years for him to put his name on the ballot box”.
The labour party Chieftain said that Sen. Melaye should rather do a soul search to discover why he lost two senate election in quick succession adding that it is obvious that he cannot fool the electorate and delegates any longer with his empty words.
“Dino Melaye is somebody who failed an election in Kogi state and he hasn’t advised himself how to win election next time. He feels he can always bamboozle his way to win election and going to senate to do nonsensical things and not representing anybody but himself”.
He said that Obi has come with new ideas, new vision and new way of running the country adding that what anyone who wishes the country well should do is listen to what Obi has to offer and either support it or come up with a more superior argument instead of Melaye’s stand that Obi should suspend his ambition
He said, “Somebody has come to put his time, his energy, his knowledge on the line to fight for Nigerians and to see if one or two things can be changed because it is doable, it can be changed and you are asking the person to wait for the next four years. This is a cheap and irresponsible commentary.
“Peter Obi has put his ideas on the table, he has put his knowledge on the table, he has put his credibility, everything on the table, his professionalism, his experience is all on the table. What you can do is to put yours as well on the table and not to discourage someone who wants to come and change the narratives of this country.
“People are fed up with APC and PDP. They want a change, they want to hear something different. What Peter Obi is saying is resonating, it is striking a note and most Nigerians are listening right now mostly the young people and you are asking him to wait and the young people who doesn’t have a job will also wait, people who have not been paid their salaries will also wait, providing light in the country should also wait, we not having petrol or diesel will also wait.
“Politics is a battle of ideas and Peter Obi has put his ideas on the table let the other put theirs on the table too and let Nigerians decide on who has a better idea, x-ray those ideas and the electorate will make the ultimate decision. The electoral doesn’t need any advise, they have ears to listen and they have their faculties to analyze what each person is saying. The sooner we all put up our ideas for sale to the electorate, the better for all of us and the country” Ogwuru stated.
The emergence of Obi as the Presidential candidate of Labour party has cause so much sleepless night among the two leading parties as the young people have been disseminating the message the canvassing support for Obi in the social media.
The is also believed that the sudden upsurge in demand for Permanent Voters Card is to vote for the candidate of the Labour Party.
