Alexander Smirnov, an FBI informant, is accused of lying about a multimillion-dollar bribery conspiracy that involved President Joe Biden, his son Hunter, and an energy company based in Ukraine.
The Republican-led congressional investigation into President Biden’s impeachment is purportedly focused on this false allegation.
According to reports, in June 2020, Smirnov lied to the FBI and told them that in 2015 or 2016, executives from the Ukrainian energy business Burisma paid Joe Biden and Hunter $5 million each, according to an indictment filed by the prosecution.
According to court filings, he informed his handler that an executive had told him that Hunter Biden had been hired to “protect us, through his dad, from all kinds of problems.”
Additionally, according to the prosecution, Smirnov only had regular commercial connections with the corporation in 2017 before he made the bribery accusations in response to his “expressed bias” against Joe Biden during his presidential campaign.
The 43-year-old Smirnov appeared briefly in court on Thursday in Las Vegas following his accusation of fabricating a record and making a false statement. But he refrained from making a plea.
Smirnov may spend up to 25 years in jail if found guilty.
