In this Interview with EKPEDEME UMOH, ECHELON, speaks on acting, her movies and other interests.
Q: Firstly, I commend your role in the movie, “Black Rose”. You delivered a very powerful performance and as a matter of fact, the movie is amongst the top 10 in Nigeria’s Netflix. What was it like playing this role, and being in the movie? With the way you interpreted the role, it had to mean something deeper to you. Can you tell us about the whole experience and what it meant to you?
Yes, Blackrose held its position as Top 10 on Netflix for 4 weeks straight. Interpreting that character was quite a tough one considering the emotional depth of the movie so I had to do a lot of research and rehearsals before the shoot. Blackrose for me was a means to relate a message to young girls so it meant a whole lot to me.
Q: “Lily’s New Friend” is also another movie where you undoubtedly proved to us how much of a brilliant actor you are. What were the challenges that came with the role?
Every good movie has its challenges, in ‘Lily’s New Friend’, it was the horror. Reacting to an invisible force and not having the words to explain it to your daughter, that is a spot nobody prays to be in.
Q: Before you became an actor, how did you perceive the movie industry (Nollywood) as a young teenager?
As a teen, I just loved how actors could take you on a ride and build your imagination and understanding about life. I loved Nollywood for making that possible.
Q: Social media has completely changed the landscape for actors, models, producers, photographers, magazines and brands. It’s great to see their huge influence can help promote the entertainment industry. Do you believe this is the way to have a positive impact on those doubting their talent especially in acting?
Like you said, it has completely changed the landscape and Yes, I believe Social Media is a positive impact on talents. You learn a lot online and you also get to showcase your talent. Plus you truly never know who’s watching so keep at it.
Q: What are the issues you’ve had to face on becoming a successful actor? Were your family always supportive of your choice? Did you always picture yourself a movie star or you had other plans?
Growing up, I had a lot of plans, becoming a movie star wasn’t part of it but when I got exposed to the movie world, I felt an undeniable passion and I followed it. At first, my mum didn’t buy into the idea and It has definitely not been easy but I believe there’s no issue a persistent person won’t overcome.
Q: Can you share some of your favourite moments since you started acting and who are some of your favs in the industry?
My favs, there’s a lot of names on that list but to mention a few, Rita Dominic, Omotola J. Ekeinde, Ramsey Noah, Dakore Akande, Adesua Wellington… and every moment is special in its own way.
Q: Do you have any new projects coming up that we should look forward to?
You should definitely look forward to ‘Nineteen’ by Tyna Ezenma and ‘Laurie’ by Oracle Films. You will love it.
Q: When you are not on set, what other things do you enjoy doing?
I love to read, watch movies and try out new things
Q: What is your perception of the Nigerian movie industry? Would you say we are meeting the Hollywood standard or there is more that still needs to be done?
There is still a lot more that needs to be done but we are moving doing quite well so far.
Q: What would be your advice to people that want to venture into this profession?
If you have passion for this profession, follow it but remember to do it the right way. Use every social media platform to your advantage and *never* stop learning. One love.
