Tragedy struck on Tuesday as a landlady (name unknown as of press time) was crushed by a Bulldozer working during the demolition exercise on the ongoing construction of Ijoka road expansion in Akure, the Ondo state capital.
It was gathered that the ugly incident occurred at King of Kings bus stop, Ijoka, in the state capital.
It was also gathered that the landlady had refused to leave her property after it had been marked for demolition by the Ondo State Government for the ongoing expansion of Ijoka road.
According to a reliable source on Wednesday, workers of the construction company operating the bulldozer started demolition of the house while the woman was inside the house.
An eyewitness said she however lost her life as she was buried in the rubbles of her property while it was being demolished by Fountain Construction Company (FCC).
It also gathered that the construction company failed to report the incident to the ministry in charge and as of Thursday, neither commissioner nor the officials in the ministry of infrastructure was briefed of the incident.
Another eyewitness revealed that the victim did not die but was seriously injured as bricks from the demolished building fell on her.
He said The Operator of the construction company’s bulldozer was not aware of the presence of the woman in the building while the demolition was ongoing.
It was gathered from residents of the area she was fully aware that her building had been marked for demolition by the government.
Confirming the incident, the permanent secretary ministry of infrastructure, Mr Idowu Allen said the incident occurred but no life was lost as the woman had been rushed to the police hospital in Akure.
Allen said “I can confirm that there was an accident but that was about three days ago and the person affected is in the hospital recuperating.
It was not actually a bulldozer accident. The Bulldozer did not touch her but the bricks being demolished hit her while she was trying to manoeuvre her way out.
She has been taken to the hospital and she is still in the hospital now.”
