Nigerians React To DCP Kyari’s Arrest Warrant

Respondents were near-unanimous in their reaction to the alleged indictment and order of arrest by a US court, of Nigeria’s supercop and local version of the fabled 007, DCP Abba Kyari.

Kyari was fingered in the ongoing Hushpuppi financial scandal by no other than the prime suspect Hushpuppi himself.

DCP Kyari had quickly rushed in a lame-duck defence which nevertheless reinforced a nexus between Hushpuppi and himself.

Though he pleaded innocence and non-complicity in the whole saga, the US Federal Bureau of Investigations, FBI, had released a transcript of Kyari”s discussion with Hushpuppi.

The IGP had reportedly set in motion the allegation to determine Kyari’s culpability or otherwise.

The bottom line is that the US court has issued an arrest order for him to be brought to justice in the US.

However, the IGP’s action is viewed in line with Nigeria’s accusatory legal tradition of presumption of innocence until proven otherwise.

However, this presumption of innocence has of recent been observed in the breach by the law enforcement and security agencies in Nigeria and DCP Abba Kyari epitomises that.

This underscores the reactions trailing his present ordeal.

Maduabuchi Olemeforo has this to say; “That his name was even mentioned is already an indictment. Then that he was acquainted with Hushpuppi makes him an accomplice. And the fact that he admitted knowing him makes him an abettor crime because he never revealed his views about him. He should go and face the law..”

For Nneka Anna Ujumadu; “Kyari does not respect rule of law. He killed man Igbo youths and burnt their houses alleging they were IPOB and ESN without any court order, now he wants to be treated as innocent. For me, he is a criminal and is guilty as charged. Let the law of the US be applied on him”.

However, Onyeka Collins feels that, “it will be wrong to pay him back in his own coins but due process should be applied. Let him go to the US and face the law and from there learn how the law is applied, not his licensed-to-kill system here”.
