Following their disastrous group-stage exit from the Africa Cup of Nations, Ghana fired head coach Chris Hughton.
The Black Stars were eliminated from Group B on Tuesday as a result of the outcomes of other matches after suffering a 2-1 loss to Cape Verde in their opening game in Ivory Coast. They subsequently drew with Egypt and Mozambique.
In February 2023, Hughton, a former manager of Newcastle and Brighton and defender for Tottenham, was chosen coach of Ghana.
The federation released a statement late on Tuesday that said, “The Ghana Football Association wishes to announce that Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the senior National team with immediate effect.”
“The Executive Council has also decided to terminate the Black Stars’ technical team.
“A road map for the Black Stars’ future trajectory will be made available by the Ghana Football Association in the coming days.”
Ghana, who in 2010 advanced to the World Cup quarterfinals, was eliminated in the group round of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
Tuesday saw the elimination of previous winners Algeria as well, and the hosts Ivory Coast is in danger of going out early.
