By Sonnie Nwosu

Barr. Julius Abure, the National Chairman of Labour Party was at INEC first 2025 quarterly meeting with political parties held on 22nd January 2025 at INEC headquarters.

There was a mild drama at the event as the Commission’s Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu happily welcomed Barr. Abure, Labour Party Chairman into the fold of National Chairmen of political parties in Nigeria.

A visibly elated INEC Chairman on the occasion of the first consultative meeting of INEC and the leadership of political parties in the year commended Barr. Abure for his resilience and sticking to the rule of law.

Barr. Julius Abure in his address to the media dispelled the on going insinuations that Peter Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate and Dr. Alex Otti, Abia State governor are working against the leadership of the party, insisting that the misunderstanding has been overblown and must be seen as a family affair which must be resolved amicably within the family.

The Labour Party Chairman also appreciated both the High Court and Court of Appeal for their judgements which favoured the party and vowed that under his watch, the party will reconcile with all the aggrieved members of the party and reposition the party for future elections.

After appreciating the courts and judges for doing justice by looking at the whole matter and resolving it in the party’s favour in line with the law of land, the constitution of Nigeria and the party’s constitution, reiterated that the squabbles within the party ought to be a family affair as that is how he sees it.

He enjoined all those who may have one grievance or the other against the leadership of the party to sheath their swords and use this opportunity to come together, reconcile the differences and chart a way forward for the party.

“For me, I am open for reconciliation and the party will apply every measure to bring everybody within the party for us to discuss and find a way forward for the party. I believe that the interest of Nigeria and that of the party supercede every other interest, so it is my appeal for every aggrieved member of the party to come back for the interest of the party and Nigeria”, he opined.

On his relationship with between Peter Obi and Governor Alex Oti concerning their involvement in the crisis in the party, he expressed assurance that very soon all their differences would be put aside and all will again speak authorutatively with one voice and come out stronger and very effective in the political space to tackle the brazen inadequacies of the government.

Finally, the Labour Party Chairman averred that there is no political party without some differences, politics being a game of interests their will always be conflicting interests in every political environment, adding that having seen the strengths and weaknesses of each other, all of these put together will reshape the party and make the party better, to perform even better in future elections.
