Former Nigeria international Stella Mbachu has boldly predicted a flawless run for the Super Falcons at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), set to kick off in Morocco.
Speaking on Brila FM’s Sports, Mbachu, who earned 89 caps and scored 20 goals during her international career, confidently stated that the Super Falcons will win every game in the tournament.
Her comments come on the heels of Nigeria’s impressive 3-1 win over West African rivals Ghana in their final warm-up match before the tournament.
Goals from Chinwendu Ihezuo, Asisat Oshoala, and Rasheedat Ajibade capped off a dominant performance for the nine-time African champions, who are looking to reclaim the title after losing to South Africa in the 2022 final.
The Falcons went into the game needing a strong display after a goalless draw against Portugal in Lisbon. Despite a bright start by the Ghanaians, who recently notched back-to-back wins over Malawi and Benin, Nigeria took control.
In the 34th minute, forward Chinwendu Ihezuo opened the scoring with her second international goal. Just before the interval, Asisat Oshoala converted from the spot to double Nigeria’s lead, ending a six-month goal drought for club and country.
Ajibade made it 3-0 shortly after the break with her third goal in two matches, adding further firepower to an already stacked Nigerian attack.
Although Ghana threatened late in the game and had a goal ruled out for offside, they eventually got on the board when Alice Kusi converted an 88th-minute penalty. The Super Falcons, however, comfortably saw out the game.
The performance will be a major confidence boost ahead of their opening WAFCON fixture against Tunisia on July 3.
With experience, talent, and depth across all positions, Mbachu believes this Nigerian team has the tools to dominate in Morocco.
The Super Falcons are drawn in Group B alongside Tunisia, Algeria, and Botswana. Victory in Morocco would extend their record to 12 WAFCON titles.
