The Defense Industry Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) is now the source of weapons and ammunition for a growing number of African nations, according to a statement from the federal government.
This achievement comes after the new DICON Act 2023 was passed. By raising foreign exchange profits, the Act is anticipated to greatly enhance Nigeria’s national development and security.
Bello Matawalle, the Minister of State for Defense, made this remark on Monday at a press conference held at the Ministry of Defense headquarters in Abuja.
The briefing was a component of the events planned for the 60th anniversary of DICON and the imminent opening of the Africa Defence Industries Conference.
The conference, with the title “DICON @ 60: Future Frontiers in Africa’s Defence Technology,” is set for August 14–15 at the DICON headquarters in Kaduna.
Speaking during the conference, Matawalle said, “We assure you that we have the capacity, we have the capability to produce, and as you know, many countries, many African countries are coming to DICON for the procurement of their arms and ammunition.”
He emphasized how the government is dedicated to improving defense capabilities by innovative thinking, strategic alliances, and technical breakthroughs.
Matawalle stressed that the DICON Act 2023 has given Nigeria’s defense sector new opportunities and given it a greater voice in the security landscape of the continent.
Since its founding in 1964, DICON has played a significant role in advancing both national security and technology in Nigeria.

The company has changed over the last 60 years, moving from making small guns and ammunition to making military vehicles, artillery, and other defense equipment.
“This 60th anniversary represents a critical turning point in our history of creativity, tenacity, and commitment to our country’s defense needs. According to Matawalle, DICON is commemorating 60 years of devoted service in the manufacture and maintenance of military hardware and equipment today.
He added that in order to attain competence in military manufacture, DICON has worked with local businesses, establishing Nigeria as a major participant in the continent’s defense sector.
