Alleged unlawful banishment: Ex-Kano Emir, Sanusi knows fate Nov 30

Justice Anwuli Chikere of the Federal High Court, Abuja, will on 30 November, deliver judgment in Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi suit, challenging his banishment to Awe, a remote community in Nasarawa State.
The former CBN governor, was on March 9, 2020, deposed after a resolution by the Kano State Executive Council, on allegation of insubordination and was subsequently banished to Awe, where he was confined until he was released on March 13, 2020, following an order of the court.
At the resumed proceeding, Thursday, Counsel to Sanusi, Abubakar Mahmoud (SAN), submitted that the plaintiff contention was about the alleged violation of his fundamental rights in relation to the manner he was shabbily treated after he was deposed and not his banishment.
Mahmood insisted that Sanusi was shabbily treated in the manner he was bundled to Abuja and subsequently banished to a remote location.
Consequently, he urged the court to grant all the reliefs sought by the ex-Emir in his suit.
In his reaction, counsel to the DG of the SSS, Godwin Agbadua, challenged the court’s jurisdiction to adjudicate on the matter, thereby asking the court to strike out the suit on the grounds that the alleged rights violation occurred in Kano, not Abuja.
In the same vein, counsel to the IGP, Victor Okoye, faulted the competence of the suit and queried the court’s jurisdiction to hear it.
He maintained that the ex-Emir’s banishment was championed by an official of the Kano State Government in Kano State, adding that the appropriate venue for Sanusi to seek redress for the alleged violation of his rights was a court in Kano State.
He, therefore, urged the court to either strike the case out or dismiss it.
After listing to the parties argument, Justice Chikelu, fixed November 30, for judgement.
