An expert cautions that fasting can impact blood sugar levels, result in renal issues.

Bolaji Salako, a consultant radiation and clinical oncologist at the Federal Medical Centre in Abeokuta, Ogun State, has cautioned Muslims about the importance of practicing healthy fasting.

According to Salako, there are health hazards associated with fasting during Ramadan, such as kidney difficulties.

Speaking on Monday in Ibadan with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, Salako stated that the hot weather made dehydration during fasting a major worry.

He issued a warning, saying that improper fasting practices can have an impact on a diabetic’s blood sugar levels.

“Long periods of time without drinking water can cause dehydration, which, if left untreated, can lead to headaches, lethargy, lightheadedness, and even more serious issues like renal problems.

Salako stated, “It is imperative that those who are fasting remain hydrated during non-fasting hours.”

Because fasting involves depriving oneself of meals and liquids during the day, which can occasionally result in vitamin imbalances, he also detected nutritional deficits.

Salako urged people who fasted to eat a balanced diet when they weren’t fasting.

According to him, eating an unbalanced diet may result in insufficient intake of vital vitamins and minerals if improperly handled.

Furthermore, fasting can have an impact on blood sugar levels, particularly in diabetics.

Salako stated, “It is crucial for people with diabetes and other illnesses like cancer and hypertension to work closely with their doctors to modify their medication schedules and closely monitor their health conditions during Ramadan.”
