The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP, Echeng. E. Echeng, has visited Nkwo Enugwu,-Ukwu market junction, Njikoka Local Government Area, scene of the assassination attack on Senator Ifeanyi Uba.
According to police sources, the CP visited the scene to physically acquint himself with the extent of attack and destruction to life and property by yet to be identified gunmen.
Recall that the State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Tochukwu Ikenga, (DSP), had earlier told newsmen that he was yet to ascertain the number of casulties even as about 10 people that included policemen attached to Senator Uba, were among the casulties.
“The CP led has personally led a team of policemen to the scene and normalcy has been restored,” PPRO stated.
Senator Ifeanyi Uba who represents Anambra South Senatorial zone in the red chamber under the Young Peoples Party, YPP, was said to be on his way back to Nnewi, from a function, when he was attacked.
According to an eyewitness account, the gunmen opened fire on the convoy in the late evening weekend and police operatives in his convoy responded, but about six policemen were gunned down.
The gunmen may have been trailing him right from the function he went to as the attack was not spontaneous going by the type of attack and scene, said the eyewitness.
“Information was gathered about the time of movement and takeoff. The policemen were about 6 in number and they were attacked.
“All their arms were collected. The boys that spearheaded that attack were about nine in number.”
Another source told this reporter that, “From the look of things there was no sign of an attack to be carried out prior to incident, that means the assailants may have been lurking around the scene, well armed, successfully carried out the operation.
” If not for the bullet-proof Jeep in which the Senator was driving in, he would have been ridden with bullets. He later came out of the Jeep when the assailants fled, believing he was killed.”
