Anambra election: We did not intercept arms and ammunition from Anambra Fed Lawmaker – Police

Nigerian Police have reacted to the recent publication that went viral on traditional and social media that the member representing Anambra East and West at the National Assembly, Hon Chinedu Obidigwe was intercepted by the Nigerian Police.
It was alleged that Hon. Obidigwe’s convoy was incepted by the combined security team at the outskirts of Nteje community, Oyi local government area, Anambra State.
The report had it that a total of 52 Ak-47 rifles, 119 pump actions and thousands of ammunition were recovered from several vehicles in the convoy.
In the report allegedly published by “Daily Times Newspaper,” the convoy was escorted back to Zone 13 Police Headquarters, Ukpo, Dunukofia local government area, Anambra State.
According to the report, “the security details attached to Hon. Chinedu Obidigwe at first geared up for a gun battle but when it became obvious that the operatives were indeed a security task force, they stood down allowing the special task force to inspect the entire vehicles in the long convoy.
“However, the security details attached to Hon. Chinedu Obidigwe insisted he would not be arrested prompting a standoff. Hon. Obidigwe who did not alight from his bullet-proof vehicle allegedly contacted Governor Willie Obiano and eventually, to avoid unnecessary casualty, the convoy was escorted back to Zone 13 Police Headquarters, Ukpo.
“It is unclear if Hon. Chinedu Obidigwe is still in custody at the Zone 13 police headquarters. Gov. Willie Obiano was however making frantic calls to ensure the case was not escalated. A security source alleged that Gov. Willie Obiano was willing to do anything to prevent the incident from coming to the public domain.
“This incident is coming barely two weeks to the governorship election in Anambra State and at a time of heightened insecurity in the state. There are fears before now that some political actors are actually behind the insecurity bedevilling the state.
“In fact, Gov. Willie Obiano during a visit to President Buhari a few weeks ago over plans to declare a state of emergency in Anambra said that politicians are the cause of the killings in the state with many of those causing mayhem coming from outside the state.” Daily Times allegedly stated.
When contacted, Hon Chinedu Obidigwe said the report was not only fake but geared towards distorting the peaceful process of the November 6 Governorship election.
Hon Obidigwe who was debunking from his house noted he travelled to Abuja for a serious meeting with some Anambra stakeholders, ahead of the election.
In his words, “I travelled on Sunday to Abuja where we had an interactive session with Anambra stakeholders in Abuja with our candidates, Prof Chukwuma Soludo.
“My media aide just called me to draw my attention to what was published in Daily Times, that I was arrested by the Zone 13 of the Nigerian police.
“Please I urge all the reading public to disregard this. It is fake, false and criminal in nature. Those peddling this rumour or who are putting this kind of publication will soon face the wrath of the law.
“Nobody knows Chinedu Obidigwe as a gunrunner and I can never be in possession of any firearm. I am not authorised to do that and I can never do that.
“I know the law and I can never offend the law. If it is their antics to win the Anambra election come November 6, they should do away with it because it will never go well with them.
“I will do all the needful needed to ensure that anyone involved in peddling this rumour will be brought to book.” Obidigwe debunked.
On the police party, the Zonal Police Public Relation Officer, Zone 13 Police Headquarters, Ukpo, Anambra State, DSP Nwode Nkeiruka, described the report as absolutely false and unfounded.
Nwodo in his release said, “The attention of Zone 13 Nigeria Police headquarters, Ukpo, Anambra State has been drawn to a misleading report trending on the social media with the above caption allegedly credited to Daily Times Nigeria that a combined team of police and military (Sunday) intercepted a huge cache of arms and ammunition from the convoy of the member representing Anambra East and West in the House of Representatives, Hon. Chinedu Obidigwe at the outskirt of Nteje in Oyi LGA of Anambra State following a tip-off and that a total of 52 Ak-47 rifles, 119 pump actions and thousands of ammunition were recovered from several vehicles in the convoy after which they were brought to zone 13 headquarters Ukpo.
“In view of the foregoing, the Zone 13 headquarters want to State unequivocally that the publication is absolutely false misleading and unfounded. It was a figment of imagination deliberately orchestrated by mischief makers in order to create tension and chaos in the State in order to achieve their selfish interests.
“The Zonal Command implores journalists and other well-meaning individuals to join fight against crime reporting contents that don’t contrast current State of security in the society as they too should be an agent of Law and Order.
“Consequently, the Assistant Inspector General of Police; AIG Umar Musa Muri, urges the public to disregard the malicious publication and further assures them that the Zone under his watch will unravel those behind the fake news in order to bring them to justice,” Nwodo stated.
