Anambra: Police train personnel on human rights law

The Anambra State Police Command has commenced training of its personnel on human rights law.

The command is conducting the training in partnership with the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC).

The state Police Public Relations Officer(PPRO), Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement to journalists on Friday in Awka, the state capital.

The statement read in part, “As part of efforts at protecting, enforcing and promoting human rights in Nigeria, Anambra State Police Command is holding a two-day training programmme for some of its officers and men in the Command on international human rights law.

“A total of 50 officers, including: sectional heads from State Criminal Investigation Department( SCID), Awka, Area Crime Officers and Divisional Crime Officers from Area Command and Divisional Headquaters were nominated and are already participating in the training exercise which commenced 30th June and ends today, 1st July, 2022.

“The Training which is also designed to enhance prompt responses to matters of human rights abuse while ensuring top-notch professionalism among police operatives in the discharge of their duties as officers, was declared open by the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State, CP Echeng Echeng who was ably represented by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Anambra State, DCP Peter Ozigi.”

The PPRO said the CP enjoined the participants on the occasion to see human rights as a crime prevention strategy and public confidence -building mechanism.

Ikenga added,”The CP thanked the Organizers of the training and urged the participants to see human rights as a crime prevention strategy and a means to build police confindence in members of public. It is a way to strengthen the our institutional accountability and internal mechanisms.

“Also at the Training program were: Assistant Commissioner of Police ACP Anietie Eyoh, Chief Superintendent of Police CSP Mike Ojegbe and others.”
