The union requested the national body’s consent for the move in a written notice signed by Chairman Peter Adamu and Secretary Peter Waziri.
According to the letter, which the News Agency of Nigeria was able to obtain on Tuesday, the strike was caused by the Kaduna State Government’s refusal to resolve a number of the academics’ complaints.
The nonpayment of five months’ salary from May to September 2022, 60% of September 2017 payments, and other withheld wages are among the main problems.
The union also brought attention to the nonpayment of money associated with the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme from 2016 to 2023, as well as Earned Academic Allowance from 2015 to 2020.
Additional issues include unpaid Group Life Insurance benefits for departed employees since 2020, promotion arrears from 2019 to 2023, and the nonpayment of pensions from 2009 to 2019.
In an August 17, 2024, meeting with Governor Uba Sani, the union recalled that the governor had promised to settle the unpaid entitlements.
The lecturers have not heard back despite a follow-up letter sent on August 20, 2024, and more pleas sent in October and December of the same year.
No payments were made at the conclusion of a meeting on December 17, 2024, during which the governor promised that payment procedures would start in three weeks.
The union reminded the governor of his pledge on January 17, 2025, and called for swift action to prevent strikes.
But since there has been no reply, the union has chosen to go ahead with the strike.
According to ASUU, the indefinite strike will go on until the unresolved welfare issues are addressed.
