Benzina sets hijab record at Women’s World Cup as Morocco secures first win
Morocco earned a surprise victory over South Korea on Sunday to secure the country’s first win at a
Women’s World Cup in a match where Nouhaila Benzina also made history.
Striker Ibtissam Jraidi scored the only goal of the match in a 1-0 victory as Morocco became the third debutants to win a game at this tournament.
It was a match filled with significant landmarks.
Defender Benzina started for Morocco to become the first player to wear a hijab at a senior-level
Women’s World Cup. Benzina, making her first appearance at the tournament, almost capped an
impressive performance with a goal, but volleyed over the crossbar.
Jraidi’s sixth-minute header was also Morocco’s first ever goal in the tournament.
“We are just so pleased our efforts have paid off. This victory is for Morocco and Arabs, it’s the fruit of our hard work,” Jraidi told reporters, per Reuters.
Morocco suffered a heavy 6-0 loss to Germany in its opening game, but was much improved in Adelaide.
Ranked 55 places below South Korea in the world rankings, it was a surprise when the debutants took the early lead but Morocco held on for a memorable win. Teenager Casey Phair had a chance to level for South Korea from close range late on but shot wide.
South Korea will be eliminated from the competition should Germany win or draw against Colombia
later on Sunday.

CAF Delists Nigeria, Libya AFCON Qualifier Amidst Controversy
The Confederation of African Football has delisted the Group D second-leg fixture of the ongoing 2025 African Cup of Nations qualifier between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and the Mediterranean Knights of Libya.
The game was earlier scheduled to take place in Libya by 8 pm after the first leg took place in Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo on Friday.
The Super Eagles beat the Mediterranean Knights by a lone goal in the dying minute of the game.
However, the return leg has been greeted with controversy after the Super Eagles players and officials narrated their over 14 hours ordeal at the Libya airport leading them to return home.
Meanwhile, CAF said it had launched an investigation into the incident after the Libya Football Federation alleged sabotage and threatened legal action against Nigeria.
The African football body further updated games that would be played on Tuesday without including the Libya versus Nigeria game on its X handle.

Super Eagles still detained at Libyan airport
Twelve hours after arriving in Libya, the Super Eagles are still stuck at the Al Abaq Airport.
On Sunday night, while the pilot was finishing his approach to the Benghazi Airport, the ValueJet chartered plane was oddly and dangerously diverted to the little airport outside of Benghazi.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) claims that the Lbyan Football Federation did not provide a reception team or even vehicles to transport the delegation members from the airport to their accommodation, which was reportedly three hours away in Benghazi.
The NFF arranged for the crew to travel in separate vehicles, but the aircraft’s diversion disrupted the plan.
As NFF authorities prepare to fly the team home, players have decided not to continue playing the game.
After winning 1-0 in the first leg last Friday, the Super Eagles will play Libya on Tuesday.
