Tobi Bakre, a Big Brother Naija season three finalist, has shared his experience of racism with MTV. Tobi who is a photographer, actor, model and television host explained that although as a dark-skinned person in Lagos State, Nigeria he never experienced racism until he got to London and needed help because he was stranded. He described racism as a ‘ugly issue’.
He said, “The more we take a stand against this ugly issue the better chance we have at finally eradicating the issue of racism because in the world of today it’s eating deep and is affecting lives and businesses. The coming generation should not have to interface with this issue and I think it’s up to us to ensure that doesn’t happen.”
He emphasised that Black lives matter.
“I remembered the time when I travelled [to] London and then it was midnight and I lost my phone. I had no access to directions to the Chelsea station and I had to ask people and I saw a white guy. And im asking him, ‘please can I get directions to the Chelsea station?’ And this guy goes, ‘Sorry I don’t speak English’. So I felt really bad, I’m like ‘Come on, you just spoke English.’”
#BlackLivesMatter is a social movement that advocates non-violent civil disobedience in protests against racial profiling, targeted police brutality against black people. The movement gained prominence after the murder of George Floyd in May by a police officer, Derek Chauvin in Minneapolis.
