Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, admitted guilt to the Federal High Court in Lagos on Friday and was sentenced to six months in prison without the possibility of a fine in connection with the misuse of Nigerian currency.
Judge Abimbola Awogboro imposed the sentence following a critical investigation of Bobrisky’s gender identity, to which he responded in the affirmative in the role of a man.
The contentious transvestite, who has frequently been at the epicenter of discussions about his gender identity in public, showed up in court and was had to face the repercussions of his behavior.
The accusations against him were based on instances in which he was allegedly observed mismanaging the naira, which is against certain Nigerian laws intended to protect the dignity of the nation’s currency.
Bobrisky quickly identified as a male during the court hearings when Justice Awogboro asked him about his gender. This declaration is consistent with his legal identity, even though his cross-dressing persona has received significant media attention.
Is the person in front of the judge a male or a woman? In response, Bobrisky said, “I am a man.”
According to Awogboro, the verdict will serve as a warning to anyone who might be detected misusing or disfiguring naira.
The judge decided that the day of his arrest, March 24, 2024, was the start of the jail sentence.
Bobrisky entered a guilty plea to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s accusation of misusing the naira, and on April 5th, the court found him guilty.
As a result, the judge decided to push back the sentence to Tuesday, April 9, 2024.
Following his conviction last Friday, Bobrisky begged the judge to impose a lighter sentence on him because he was unaware of the law regarding naira abuse.
He pleaded with the court during his allocutus that he was ignorant of the law regarding naira abuse.
He claimed to have more than five million followers on social media.
The judge then informed him that not knowing the law did not qualify as an excuse.
“I know my Lord,” he declared. Lord, please allow me another chance to use this platform to teach and enlighten my people regarding money spraying.
“I would make a video and post it on my page to inform people about money spraying.”
“My lord, I regret my actions and I will not repeat it.”
