The President of the Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB), Mrs. Bouchra Hajij, has honoured Nigeria’s “Father of Volleyball,” Engineer Habu Gumel, for his outstanding contributions to the development of the sport in Africa and across the globe.
The recognition on Saturday, presented during the CAVB Congress in Cabo Verde, celebrates Gumel’s decades of dedicated service to volleyball and his efforts to promote the growth, administration and development of the sport at national, continental and international levels.
Gumel, who is also the President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), has played a prominent role in the advancement of volleyball in Nigeria, as well as in international sports administration.
Presenting the honour, Hajij acknowledged Gumel’s commitment to the sport and his enduring contributions to volleyball development across Africa.
The recognition further underscores the impact of Nigerian sports administrators who have contributed to strengthening Africa’s presence in global sports.
Gumel has remained a major figure in Nigerian sports administration, combining his responsibilities at the NOC with his long-standing involvement in volleyball.
The honour highlights his contributions to the development of athletes, administrators and structures that support the growth of volleyball across the continent.
The CAVB recognition adds to Gumel’s longstanding record of service to volleyball and the Olympic movement, reinforcing his status as one of Nigeria’s prominent figures in sports administration.
