Cheaper Cooking Gas, Charcoal Use Ban Crucial To Sustain Crop Production – Don

Placing ban on charcoal productions, lowering prices of cooking gas and providing alternative water sources have been identified as necessary measures to ensure sustainable crop production amidst the climate change challenges.

A senior lecturer in the Department of Agriculture at the Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Professor Ibrahim Haruna gave the insights on Wednesday.

The university don stated this during the 33rd inaugural lecture of the institution with the tittle: “Climate Smart Agriculture, A Sure Means to Sustainable Crop Production In A Changing Climate.”

Prof. Haruna also recommended that early warning alert should be transmitted into various languages for residents while seeking that Climate- Smart Agriculture be aligned with national policy.

Chairman of the inaugural lecture, who is also the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Suleiman Bala, described the lecture as another milestone achievement in the history of the institution.

He noted that it exposes how best crop production sustainability can be attained through Smart Agriculture.

Professor Bala added that the presentation shows that it is possible to have sustainable crop production amidst the challenges of climate change.

“The lecture is very important because it has given knowledge on effective crop production by the adoptions of Smart Agriculture,” he pointed.

The event was honoured by traditional rulers from Toto Local Government Area which is the home town of the lecture presenter.
