Coalition urges Tinubu to improve condition of Nigerian prisons

A socio-political organisation, Coalition of Registered Civil Society Organisation in Nigeria (CRCSON), has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to assist the Controller General of Nigerian Correctional Service, Haliru Nababa, to enable him improve conditions of Nigerian correctional service.

National president of the coalition, Comrade Opuama Joseph (JP), who made the call in Abuja on Friday, noted that there is serious congestion in most Nigerian prisons, a situation he said, needs to be addressed and improved upon.

Opuama said the federal government should assist the service through improved budgetary allocation to support the current reforms being embarked upon by the the controller general of the service

He noted, however, that with the little budgetary allocation to the service, Haliru Nababa was able to utilise judiciously, resources meant for the correctional service for the development of the country.

The president of the coalition pointed out that the controller general has initiated and completed Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) staff quarters in Abuja and ensures training and retraining of personnel to boost productivity in the service.

He continued, “He promotes staff discipline: As we all know, discipline is the watch-hood for every officer in the service and he has not compromised.

Security in the custodial centres across the country has improved tremendously because of his strategies and proper deployment of personnel and improved synergy with other security agencies and this has really changed the narrative to tackle previous jailbreaks across the country.

The controller general also established viable vocational training centres across the correctional service formations to ensure inmates acquired the needed skills acquisition in various categories, such as welding, barbing, tailoring, carpentry, etc for them to become self-reliance after serving their jail term.

He made provision for adequate inmate welfare, introduced rapid infrastructural upgrade and provided farms and animal husbandry to enhance the training of inmates in plants and livestock production.”

Also speaking, the secretary general of the coalition, Prince Joel Samoh, explained that the group is an auspices of various civil society groups in Nigeria with the mandate to promote peace, unity and development of Nigeria.

Samoh added that the coalition is also saddled with the responsibilities of encouraging, promoting and appreciating individuals, government officials and associations that have contributed immensely to the well-being, growth and development of our country.

“It is on this note therefore, after vigorous and intensive investigation, the coalition decided to move a vote of confidence and as well showcase the the present Controller General of Nigerian Correctional Service, Haliru Nababa MFR, for his innovation, good leadership, and excellent performance that has repositioned the Nigerian Correctional Service for efficient and effective service delivery,” he added.
