Africa’s leading table tennis nations will converge on Tangier, Morocco, as the 2026 ITTF Africa Championships serve off on Sunday, October 18, with the competition running until October 25.
The week-long tournament, hosted by the Royal Moroccan Table Tennis Federation (RMTTF) in collaboration with ITTF Africa, will feature men’s and women’s team events, singles, doubles and mixed doubles competitions.
Beyond continental honours, the championship will serve as a qualifying event for the 2027 ITTF World Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan.
Defending champions Egypt will aim to maintain their dominance, but Algeria, Tunisia, hosts Morocco and Madagascar are expected to provide stiff competition.
Nigeria’s absence could also influence the contest after the country missed the Western Region tournament in Conakry, Guinea, earlier this year, affecting its participation in the continental championship.
Meanwhile, ITTF Africa President, Wahid Enitan Oshodi, has expressed satisfaction with Morocco’s preparations, praising the organisers for their attention to detail and logistical arrangements for participating teams.
“So far, so good. Everything is looking good for us to have a good tournament, as every detail has been followed to the letter by the host,” Oshodi said.
He stressed that players’ welfare remained a priority, adding that the arrangements would provide an enabling environment for athletes to perform at their best.
Oshodi also expressed optimism that emerging talents would shine, following their impressive performances at the African Youth Championships in Accra, Ghana.
With established stars and promising youngsters expected to compete, Tangier is set for an exciting championship, with continental supremacy and qualification for the 2027 World Championships at stake.
