Elections observers urge Nigerians to shun violence

The management of conflict and mitigation regional Council has tasked Nigerians to shun violence and other associated criminalities and electoral malpractices during the forthcoming nationwide elections on Saturday.

 

They made their position known in a statement signed by the Chairperson, Mrs  Rachel Ityonzughul and Co- Chairman, Mallam Ahmed Baba and issued on Thursday in Makurdi, the capital city.

 

The duo reiterated the already fragile condition urging Nigerians to do everything humanly possible to jettison any thing that could result to bloodbath during the governorship and State assembly polls.

 

They stated that it was the earnest desire of the group that the Saturday polls take place devoid of all forms of malpractices, stressing that it should not be characterized by violence before, during and after elections.

 

They advised the electorate to report any threats to disrupt the electoral process to the law enforcement agencies in order tackle it head on.

 

According to the statement, they condemned the crisis between Otukpo and Obi Local Government Areas of Benue.

 

They disclosed that the clash was as a result of power outage which was considered to be caused by one of the communities in Otukpo local government, stating that it had claimed three lives already.

 

They, however, disclosed that after a careful investigation carried out, it was discovered that the community experienced the power outage because of rainstorm.

 

They sued for calm, adding that more deployment of security personnel should be sent to the areas to forestall further break down of law and order.

 

They appealed to the security personnel to fish out the culprits and bring them to book.

 

Similarly, the State Police Commissioner Mr. Abass Wale has expressed the readiness of his command to provide adequate security during the exercise on Saturday.
