Taye Atske Selassie, the foreign minister, was named the new president of Ethiopia on Monday by the two houses of the parliament.
Sahle-Work Zewde is replaced by Selassie. This change comes in the wake of a social media post that President Sahle-Works posted last week that raised a lot of rumors about her possible departure.
Sahle-Work tweeted something on Saturday that many took to be a hint that she might be quitting. She tweeted, using the song “Silence is My Answer” by Mahmoud Ahmed: “Hope is a person’s only hope when he feels sad and broken and has nowhere to go.”
This emotionally charged remark has sparked a public discussion and speculation regarding her future, especially in light of claims from The Habesha indicating that she may step down as early as next week.
Sahle-Works’ tweet was sent out at a time when the public was criticizing her more and more, especially for what was seen as her perceived lack of response to the ongoing unrest in several parts of Ethiopia.
