According to Femi Falana, SAN, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Nigerians are entitled to keep and bear arms for self-defense.
Falana claimed that Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff, had taken the wrong stand on Nigerians carrying guns.
After the Christmas Eve attacks on several villages in Plateau State, Lagbaja said that Nigerians had no constitutional right to own and bear arms.
Falana asserted that in order to possess firearms, Nigerians must obtain a license.
Falana stated during her appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Breakfast on Wednesday that it is inaccurate to state that Nigerians do not have the right to possess arms. Apart from the fact that the right to self-defense is recognized by both the criminal codes that apply in the North and the South.
Stated differently, I am entitled to fire a gun at someone aiming at me if I can react fast enough to seize another weapon.
However, you must first submit an application for the license.
“I’m just talking about the Constitution’s guarantee of the right to self-defense.”
