FG seals five textile warehouses in Kano over deceptive sales

  • by

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has shut down five major textile warehouses in Kano for allegedly selling underweight and shortened fabrics to consumers.

The enforcement operation, led by Boladale Adeyinka, Director of Surveillance and Investigation, followed weeks of market monitoring across major textile hubs in the state.

The affected distributors were linked to brands such as LGR Product, U&Me, Nana Tex, V Levintus, Mama Africa, Hightex, UE, S-U Velt, and Jisiki Products. The warehouses were sealed at multiple locations including Gandun Abada Layout, Ibrahim Taiwo Road, Ajasa Inuwa Wada Road, and Gandun Albasa New Layout.

According to the FCCPC, the firms misrepresented fabric lengths and weights, violating Sections 123(1) and 125(1) of the FCCPC Act, which prohibit false or misleading claims about product quantity or price.

FCCPC Executive Vice Chairman, Tunji Bello, condemned the act as a threat to fair competition and consumer welfare.
“This nefarious practice of selling underweight products undermines honest traders and can drive legitimate retailers out of the market,” Bello said.

He pledged continued nationwide enforcement against deceptive practices and reminded retailers of their obligation to maintain accurate product descriptions and standards.

In a related action, the FCCPC recently shut down the TLSContact Visa Application Centre in Abuja for obstructing an investigation into a consumer complaint.
