At least twelve people have lost their lives in separate incidents that happened in Borno and Kwara states on Saturday and Sunday.
In Borno State, the state emergency management agency con‑rmed that three people lost their lives in Saturday’s ‑re at the Muna El[1]Badawy Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp in Maiduguri.
Its Director-General, Hajiya Yabawa Kolo, con‑rmed the death toll during an impact assessment visit to the scene. She said at least 3,000 shelters were destroyed while dozens of households in the camp were displaced.
She said the ‑re, which began from a tent, gutted other shelters because there was no immediate ‑re service response in the camp at the time of the incident. Kolo noted that ‑re outbreaks in camps and communities where returned IDPs had been resettled were becoming a regular occurrence. She said there was a similar incident at Ngirburi Village in the Jere Local Government Area recently in which two persons died. “

“Another ‑re incident occurred at Mandarari IDP camp, located within Konduga town in Konduga Local Government Area,’’ she said. Kolo said the agency was conducting assessment to ascertain the level of damage, noting that the critical needs of the victims were food, shelter and other non-food items. “We appeal to the National Emergency Management Agency, the Northeast Development Commission and the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Aairs, Disaster Management and Social Development to assist the IDPs,’’ she said.
While in Kwara state, the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) on Sunday said that nine persons died in a crash that occurred on the Ilorin- Ogbomoso Road. Its Sector Commander in Kwara, Mr Jonathan Owoade, con‑rmed the development at a news conference on Sunday in Ilorin. According to him, the fatal crash occurred opposite the Ilorin International Airport in Ilorin.
Owoade said that the crash was as a result of a speed limit violation which involved a light ash private Toyota Corolla car, with registration number: LRN787FE and a white commercial Toyota Hiace bus, with registration number: AFN06YL. He said that the crash which involved 20 persons, had eight persons injured, while nine others were con‑rmed dead.
