The Federal Government has issued a new flood alarm to Nigerians owing to water flow from Jebba Dam.
The operators of Kainji Dam, who had kept a 53-cm buffer to adjust to fluctuating inflows, are in charge of managing the extra water that Jebba Dam is currently releasing, according to a recent statement from Umar Ibrahim Mohammed, Director General of the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA).
In order to efficiently control reservoir levels, NIHSA has been collaborating with the operators of the Kainji and Jebba Dams through Pastor Femi Bejide, Director of Operational Hydrology.
“On the management of the reservoirs, NIHSA is closely collaborating with the operators of Kainji and Jebba Dams through Pastor Femi Bejide, Director of Operational Hydrology.
“The rain is gradually shifting to the south, however, there is still some amount of water coming into Nigeria as monitored from our station at Jidere Bode and Kende,” Mohammed underlined.
In order to assist Nigeria’s socioeconomic stability, he emphasized NIHSA’s strong collaboration with the national and international authorities in charge of these dams. He also emphasized the agency’s commitment to managing river flood events.
Mohammed reported that since early October, the River Niger Basin’s water levels had been gradually dropping.
He did, however, reiterate the NIHSA’s commitment to efficient flood management throughout the nation and advised Nigerians to keep up with their flood preparations.
This warning comes in response to reports of catastrophic floods occurring throughout Nigeria, with Maiduguri, the state capital of Borno State, being among the hardest hit.
