Following an alert on anticipated flooding issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET), the Yobe State Government through the Ministry of Environment’s committee has begun a massive clearing of drainages, fumigation, and a spray of insecticide and pesticides across Potiskum town.
Speaking to our Correspondent on the exercise, the Chairman of the Committee Mohammed Yunusa said that the exercise is aimed at clearing up all the blocked drains as well as fumigating and spraying insecticide and pesticides to control flooding mosquito bites thereby bringing down the waves of malaria and other related diseases.
He further explained that the exercise is aimed at improving environmental health and hygiene to reduce pollution and blockage of drainages as well as enhance sanity.
According to him, a monitoring team was set up to ensure total compliance with revised sanitation regulations and environmental laws against dumping of refuse in waterways and other waterways to justify the efforts of the government.
“We want to achieve absolute cleanliness in Potiskum and other streets of the area, and we have started by cleaning up the drainages. We will recapture Potiskum” they said.
