Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara has stated that he is not in a fight.
He was speaking in the midst of his falling out with former council chairs who supported Nyesom Wike, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
Fubara clarified that he is merely protecting the state and himself against attackers.
Speaking yesterday in the state capital of Port Harcourt, he bemoaned the state’s lack of application of the express statutory provisions of the constitution regarding the tenure of local government chairmen.
He demanded that such schemes to subvert the constitution in order to benefit certain special interests be checked.
Fubara claims, “Where on earth has the local government chairmen’s tenure been extended?
Is it because Rivers State’s constitution is different from the one that controls Nigeria?
“These are important concerns that need to be asked. Why is the law usually silent on Rivers State issues?
Is there someone who is more powerful than Nigeria? That is the query I would like you to consider.
“Local government chairmen will take advantage of me more than any other governor, but I ignore it since nobody will ultimately look at our battles—only your accomplishments will.
“I need to concentrate and make sure that no matter how tough and challenging the situation is, I must deliver to the people of Rivers State. I know that all those things are distractions.”
Following his reluctance to extend their term, Fubara and previous local government chairman in the state got into a heated argument.
Fubara swore in interim chairman as Wike’s loyal council chairmen demanded to stay in their positions.
