Ghana Part Ways With Queiroz After Gambia Defeat

Ghana have parted ways with head coach Carlos Queiroz following their disappointing 4-2 defeat to Gambia in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) announced on Thursday that it had mutually agreed with the Portuguese coach to terminate his contract, barely a month after reappointing him.

Queiroz said in a farewell message published on the GFA website that the decision was taken in the interest of Ghana, the Black Stars and the country’s football.

He added that the necessary conditions for the continuation of his mandate had not been fully established, while recent results contributed to the decision.

Ghana surrendered a two-goal lead against Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium, with Ernest Nuamah and Felix Afena-Gyan putting the hosts ahead before the visitors scored four times.
The defeat followed a 2-0 loss to Ivory Coast, leaving Ghana without a point from their opening two Group C matches.

Queiroz departs with one win, two draws and four defeats from seven matches, with Ghana scoring five goals and conceding 10.

The 73-year-old first took charge in April on a four-month contract aimed at guiding Ghana through the 2026 World Cup. He was later reappointed by the GFA on September 2.

His earlier spell included Ghana’s qualification for the World Cup knockout stage, where they beat Panama and drew with England before losing 1-0 to Colombia.

Queiroz’s departure leaves the GFA searching for a new coach as Ghana attempt to revive their AFCON qualification campaign.
With only the top two teams from the four-team group qualifying, the Black Stars face a difficult task after their opening defeats.
