Due to the ongoing statewide power outage, electricity distribution businesses (DisCos) run the possibility of having their licenses revoked.
Despite the generation firms’ (GenCos) increased power output to 4,000MW, the ministry remains genuinely worried about the poor distribution of electricity by the DisCos, according to Adebayo Adelabu, the minister of power.
Adelabu expressed his displeasure in a message shared on his X Twitter on Wednesday, saying that in spite of the advancements, some power distribution companies were not dispersing the power supplied by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) sufficiently.
“I pledge to keep distribution businesses of all stripes responsible for their actions. The minister issued a warning: “Severe repercussions, including license revocation, may be enforced for willful non-performance.
In order to increase supply in the impacted areas, he further said, “I have directed TCN to prioritize repair works on damaged transmission towers and power lines.”

Speaking further, Adelabu disclosed that actions were being taken to pay off debts owing to gas supply and power generation businesses, which will lessen financial strains and improve electricity generation nationwide.
The minister added that he had called the managing director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and the CEOs of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) and Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IEDC) to discuss the current challenges in power distribution across the country.
The Generating Companies (GENCOs) have been under pressure from the Ministry to improve their performance, and as a result, generation has recently increased to over 4000MW.
“Despite these advancements, certain distribution businesses are not distributing TCN’s power effectively, and in places like Abuja, Benin, Port Harcourt, and Ibadan, the problem is made worse by power infrastructure vandalism.
He said, “Arrangements are in place to pay off outstanding debts to gas supply and power generation companies, which will ease the financial burden and help to raise generation levels across the country.”
Therefore, Adelabu asked users of power to exercise patience “while we work tirelessly to address these issues and provide better service to all Nigerians.”
