Guide against fake news, INEC urges media

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called on the media guard against fake news that could derail the process of conducting credible ekections in the country

This is even as the commission pledged it’s continuous support to the media to strengthen democratic governance in the Nigeria.

INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakub u gave the assurance in Abuja on Thursday at the quarterly Consultative Meeting with Media for 2024 held at he commission’s headquarters in Abuja, ahead of the off-cycle governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states respectively.

Professor Yakubu who said INEC’s management does not believe in censorship promised that the commission would continue to remain open to guard against fake news just as he maintained that the Commission would continue to welcome reports, commentaries and analysis on elections to improve service delivery.

Earlier in his remark, the President of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Chris Isiguzo charged INEC to work closely with stakeholders including the media for credible conduct of next governorship elections in Edo and Ondo States.

Isiguzo noted that , “It is by working together that we can uphold the sanctity of the ballot box and safeguard the nation”.
