Igbo Traders Suggest Ways Forward for Economy

For all hands to be on deck toward enhancing the country’s economy, the Chairman, Igbo Traders Association, Garki Model Market, Garki 2, Abuja, Chief Sunday Chukwu, who doubles as the Managing Director (MD), Sunny Bright Global Concepts Limited, have suggested ways forward for the country’s economy. Addressing journalists in his office yesterday, he advised the Federal Government (FG) to identify the real traders whenever it wants to motivate them financially and otherwise.

He alleged that the FG gives financial assistance meant for the business people to non[1]business people. Chukwu called for proper identification of business people through their leaders, for the purpose of such support to be achieved. Another way out, he went on, was to bridge the gap between the traders and the government. Chukwu said that he had noted with dismay that the government had not been sounding out traders on the economy, saying that business people contribute to the economy more than the government because they create more jobs.

Reiterating the need for the gap between traders and the government to be bridged as is done in China and some other countries, due to what he sees as the importance of the traders to the society, Chukwu urged the government to invest in business people to boost the economy.

Appealing to the government to reduce multiple taxation imposed on business people, he urged the government to provide amenities such as good roads, electricity supply, among other things that can make business thrive in a country. He enjoined the government to reduce interest charged on loans by commercial banks, complaining that the high interest rate and multiple taxation affect them seriously. He however advised the traders to believe in themselves and accept the reality on the ground, so as to be able to succeed.
