Reports that the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has been pressuring the National Assembly to change the Nigeria Police Act 2020 in order to extend his term and the length of service of force officers have been refuted.
ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, made a statement that included this information.
It is imperative to state categorically that the law was first introduced during the 8th Assembly, but it did not advance past the preliminary stages prior to the Assembly’s dissolution.
“Reviewing and updating laws to reflect current national realities is standard legislative practice,” the speaker stated.
The proposed change aims to raise the age limit from 60 to 65years old and increase the number of years that police officers must serve from 35 to 40 years.
“The spread of false information across various media platforms, particularly the distorted publication by online media, regarding the proposed amendment to the Nigeria Police Act 2020,” stated Adejobi, “deeply perturbs the Nigeria Police Force.”
According to the false publications, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun himself introduced this measure to extend his term as the 22nd indigenous Inspector General of Police, and he has made a substantial financial investment in lobbying politicians to help it pass.
“One need only consider the Inspector General of Police’s unwavering dedication to transforming the Nigeria Police Force in order to comprehend the actual intentions underlying this endeavor.
