Worried by the rate of insecurity in parts of the country, a group, Road Accident Prevention Network Center (RAPNEC NG) has called for a declaration of a state of emergency on Nigerian highways, and the introduction of Intelligent Transport System (ITS).
The group, which made the call in Abuja at the weekend, said the recent activities of terrorists resulting in kidnapping and abduction of travelers and motorists demand immediate action.
In a statement by its president, Prince Ogu, the group noted that the recent activities of terrorists on Nigerian highways have reached alarming levels, necessitating a declaration of a state of emergency on our roads.
Ogu said as a concerned group, Road Accident Prevention Network Center (RAPNEC NG), also charges the Federal Government to take immediate action to protect the lives and properties of Nigerians.
He added that government should mobilize security forces to secure the roads, provide adequate support to victims of these heinous crimes and introduce an Intelligent Transport System (ITS) to enhance road safety and security.
The group pointed out that the introduction of ITS is crucial in curbing this menace, as it would provide, real-time monitoring, rapid response, data-driven decision-making, real-time tracking of vehicles and passengers.
It added that the benefits of ITS also include, automated incident detection and response, enhanced surveillance and monitoring, as well as data analysis for predictive policing.
Ogu urges all Nigerians to join the group in this call to action, and to demand a safer and more secure environment for all.
