One of the boys kidnapped from the Government Science Secondary School, Kankara, Kastina State who escaped from Boko Haram captivity said that after they were kidnapped they were made to trek for hours from Kastina State to the neighbouring Zamfara State.
Ahmad, who is aged 18 told an AFP reporter that gunmen arrived in the school at Kankara, late Friday evening and at first, the students thought it was local security (vigilantes) but then the men started firing.
“We became terrified. Some of us ran to the perimeter fence trying to escape, while others hid inside. They kept shouting we should come back, that they were in the school to rescue us. And most of us came back,” he said.
The boys were made to walk despite having no footwear. He said, “they flogged us with tree branches and the flat side of their machetes.”
But he and a friend were able to hide in a bush and waited in complete silence before starting back to their village.
Abubakar Shekau has claimed responsibility for the kidnap. Seventeen boys also reportedly escaped from captivity and returned on Tuesday. Parents continue to gather at the school daily hoping for some information on their missing children.
