A media rights group the League of Anambra Media Practitioners, has advocated for the support of other political blocks in Nigeria, especially those in the Senate, for the emergence of Governor David Umahi, who is a Senator-elect from Ebonyi South, Ebonyi State, as the next President of 10th Senate, which would be inaugurated by June 2023.
The group, in a statement on Sunday and signed by its national convener Mr Williams Orji, and secretary Mrs ChIzoba Okonkwo-Ogbeche, said Engr David Umahi has all qualifications and experience to be the next senate president, qualifications, the group said, that dwarfed other contenders to the seat.
According to LAMP, Governor Umahi was instrumental for the in-road the ruling All Progressives Congress APC, made in the South-East, immediately he cross-carpeted from the then dominant PDP to APC, an action many saw then as political suicide, but which has, today, seen as a political gain for the party, as the party now controls two states in the zone namely Ebonyi and Imo states, thereby , placing the party as the dominant political party in the party, as other parties including the once dominant PDP now has only one party it controls, after 2023 general election.
This magnificent milestone, the group said, were achieved within two years of Engr. Umahi joining the All Progressives Congress,
The group added that the success story of the party in Ebonyi state is “borne out of the political dexterity of the Engr Umahi, which he deployed to lift a Party which hitherto had no single Councilor as lately as 2020, but today has “won the three Senatorial District seats in the State, three out of the six House of Representatives positions, with the result of one still outstanding, eighteen out of the twenty House of Assembly seats already declared (re-run elections are to be conducted in parts of two State constituencies), thirteen Chairmen in the thirteen Local Government Councils in the State and all the Councillorship positions. And above all, he has made sure that the party in the state still retained the governorship position by the election of Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru as the next executive governor of Ebonyi state, in a landslide victory.”
The group said other contestants to the position of senate president, did not deliver their respective states like Engr. Umahi did in Ebonyi state, “even some of those claiming that it is their turn to be the next senate president lost their wards to the opposition parties in their states. How then can such people lay claim that it’s their turn to be the next senate president?” the group queried
The group said Governor Umahi has deployed his articulated, decisive, successful and productive ingenuity not only in running Ebonyi state, but in repositioning All Progressives Congress in the south east as a whole by placing the zone in mainstream of Nigeria political equation.
“The South-east geo-political zone has, no doubt, played major roles in stabilizing the present democracy and promoting the Nigeria project. The zone has shown a further commitment to national integration by moving from a non-APC zone in 2015 to the present two APC States of Imo and Ebonyi States. In the diligence and calculations that have projected the zone to the mainstream national politics, the roles of His Excellency, Engr. David Nweze Umahi, the Executive Governor of Ebonyi State and the Senator-elect for Ebonyi South Senatorial District are brave, outstanding and cannot be over-emphasized.”
LAMP said Engr. Umahi has all it takes to pilot the affairs of the Senate more than other contestants having been the Ebonyi State chapter chairman of the People’s Democratic Party, Deputy Governor and elected for two tenures as Governor. All these, he achieved through his political acumen and network which he built across the nation; a quality he intends to deploy in managing the affairs of the senate, if eventually he was made the senate president.
“Governor Umahi has shown competence in all the public endeavours he has so far undertaken. He has strength of character, loyal to country, Party, superiors, colleagues and friends, knowledgeable and articulate in the areas that matter most, detribalized and urbane in the areas that build bridges of socio-political, economic and religion cohesion, and understands the factors required for Nigeria’s discernible progress.”
The group said that for a proper and effective integration of the South-east geo-political zone, the Senators of the 10th Senate, the leadership of the All Progressives Congress, President Mohammadu Buhari and the President-elect Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, should consider and accept Governor Umahi as the unanimous choice for the office of the President of the 10th Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
