Looming fuel scarcity: IPMAN suspends action amid reconciliatory deal

BY SAM OTUONYE
The Nigerian media were awashed with news and screaming headlines of a looming fuel scarcity early in the week, owing to N100 billion debt owed by the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN).
IPMAN, a group in charge of trucking and distribution of Petroleum products across the country had accused the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) of owing them bridging costs amounting to N100 billion with a threat to embark on a nation-wide strike.

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria had issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority to pay the bridging claims owed marketers amounting to N100bn or face an industrial action.

Bridging claims represent the cost of transporting fuel from the former Pipelines and Products Marketing Company depots to approved zones to ensure a uniform pump price across the country.

The association threatened to withdraw services if the amount was not paid to them before the deadline.

But, the Union Thursday, made a u- turn as it said negotiation had been instituted with NMDPRA to resolve the impasse.
In a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Chief Chinedu Ukadike and made available to New National Star, NMDPRA and the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources have expressed their commitment to addressing the pending claims and other issues.
The statement read: “I have been directed to address the concerns regarding the outstanding bridging claims backlog that many of our members are currently experiencing. Please be assured that the National Executive Committee (NEC) of IPMAN ably led by Alhaji Abubakar Shettima Maigandi is actively engaged in resolving these issues as swiftly as possible.
“We have been in communication with the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) and the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources . They have expressed their commitment to addressing these pending claims and other issues.
“They equally assured us that payment will take place within a short period.
“In the meantime, we kindly implore all members to remain calm and patient as we work towards securing the necessary approvals and payments. We understand the importance of these claims to you and appreciate your understanding during this process.
“Additionally, we encourage all members to refrain from any action(s) that may disrupt our collective efforts, including strike actions.
“Our upcoming official meeting with the NMDPRA will be a critical opportunity to discuss these matters further, and your participation will be invaluable.
“Thank you for your continued support and dedication to the association. The desk will keep you updated on any developments as they arise.”
