Lotus Bank Abeokuta 10KM Race: Kenyan Runners Emerge Victorious In Record Time

Peter Mwaniki of Kenya on Saturday, September 9, 2023 won the Lotus Bank Abeokuta 10 Kilometer Race in Twenty Eight minutes and Fourteen seconds (28:14).

In a race that had 30 elite runners from across the World, and thousands of indigenous athletes, it was the East African runner who etched his name in gold to win the five thousand dollars prize money for the first to hit the finish line.

Similarly, his compatriot Shamila Kipsirir won the female category in thirty two minutes and twenty seven seconds. (32:22).

Before yesterday’s event, Peter Kemboi’s (28:16), was the record time for Men at the Abeokuta 10 Kilometer Race which debuted in 2019, while Ethiopia’s Tadu Nare until yesterday held the record for women (33:43).

Francis James from Plateau State made his appearance at the event count by taking home the One million Naira Prize money for the first Nigerian to complete the race, he did it in thirty one minutes and eight seconds (31:8).

According to the Organizers, Nilayo Sports Management Limited, winners in both categories will take home five thousand dollars, while first and second runner up will receive two thousand dollars and one thousand dollars in that order.
