Mexico in the early hours of Sunday humbled Nigeria home-based senior national team, Super Eagles 4-0 in a friendly encounter in front of 53, 258 fans at the Coliseum in Los Angeles.
The El-Tri used the encounter as their final preparation match ahead of the commencement of the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Home-based Eagles went into the game in disarray, as the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) technical director, Austin Eguavon, who was to lead the team to the encounter was denied a visa, a situation that prevented him from travelling with the team.
Meanwhile, the Eagles Technical Adviser, Gernot Rohr, had earlier declined to lead the home-based team to the encounter However, a brace from Hector Herrera and goals from Rogelio Funes and Jonathan dos Santos gave the Mexicans a comfortable win against Nigerian home-based Eagles. An unmarked Herrera opened the scoring for Mexico within two minutes of the encounter, turning in Jesus Corona’s corner at the far post. Less than 90 seconds later, Mexico were 2-0 up after Funes Mori made it two. Herrera added his second in the 52nd minute before Dos Santos rounded off the night with a controlled finish 12 minutes from time.
