Naomi Ackie To Play Whitney Houston In New Biopic

Naomi Ackie has been confirmed to characterise Whitney Houston in a new film about the latter’s life which will be titled “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.”

Ackie is a 28-year-old British actress who won a Bafta TV Award earlier in 2020. She appeared in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, playing the role of Jannah.

The movie will be scripted by Anthony McCarten who also scripted Bohemian Rhapsody, the biopic about the life of Freddie Mercury.

Stella Meghie, director of the movie, told reporters she was impressed by Ackie’s performance. “We spent the better part of the last year in an exhaustive search for an actress who could embody Whitney Houston. Naomi Ackie impressed us at every stage of the process. I was moved by her ability to capture the stage presence of a global icon while bringing humanity to her interior life,” she said.

Houston who died in 2012 was an award-winning singer and actress, making her acting debut with the 1992 romantic thriller, The Bodyguard. She was well-known for Saving All My Love For You and her rendition of Dolly Parton’s I Will Always Love You.

Clive Davis, who worked closely with Houston and is one of the producers on the new film, said Ackie’s screen test “was so powerful, it sent shivers up my spine”.
