Nasarawa Organised Labour suspends strike

The Organised Labour in Nasarawa State has suspended its three weeks old strike action.

This followed an agreement reached between the State Government and Labour on Monday evening.

Labour in the State embarked on an indefinite strike on June 15, 2021, to press for full implementation of the new National minimum wage, pending promotion and other issues of improving welfare.

The State Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Yusuf Iya, who announced the immediate suspension of the strike action shortly after signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with representatives of Abdullahi Sule led administration at the Government House Lafia, directed workers to resume at their duty posts with effect from Tuesday, July 6, 2021.

Iya who thanked the traditional rulers in the State and other stakeholders, including a one-time Governorship Aspirants in the State, Aliyu Wadada for their intervention towards the amicable resolution of the problem, promised that workers will continue to play their roles towards the success of the current administration.

Speaking during the signing of the agreement, the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr Abdulkarim Kana, who read the agreement before the Labour leaders and representatives of government at the instance of the State Governor Abdullahi Sule,
said the state government has agreed to start the implementation of the over 10 years outstanding promotion of workers from next Month.

The Attorney General said the State government has agreed to pay the last tranche of the August 2016 unpaid salaries with immediate effect.
On the implementation of the N30,000 minimum wage, Kana said both parties agreed that implementation for workers from grade levels one to Seven should continue while negotiation will be effected on the consequential adjustment for workers on grade level seven and above.

According to him, both parties agreed that no worker would be victimised for participating or refused to join in the strike.

He stated further that the parties agreed that government should introduce a development levy for all categories of income earners in the State for the next period of 12 months, to enable boost the revenue profile of the state.

In his remarks, the State Governor, Abdullahi Sule who commended the maturity exhibited by the Labour Leaders and the intervention of Traditional rulers that led to the agreement and subsequent suspension of the strike action, appealed to Workers to supports his administration’s policies and programmes for the common good of the State.
