Nathaniel Bassey, a prominent gospel minister, has filed a plea with Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun about claims that he is the father of Mercy Chinwo’s child.
Bassey called on the IGP to look into and bring charges against four people he claimed were engaging in criminal defamation and cyberstalking.
On April 1, 2024, the singer filed the petition via the legal representatives of Peter Abraham, Uche Matthew, Gbenga Agunloye, and Anthony Abia.
The popular gospel singer’s son was allegedly fathered by Bassey, according to four social media users’ allegations last week, which went viral on X.
As a result, the attorneys implored the police to look into the petition against the four social media users—Okoronkwo Ejike, Kingsley Ibeh, Terrence Ekot, and Dj Spoiltkid—as soon as possible.
The petition states: “Our client is a gospel music minister whose ministry and songs have touched the lives of countless people from all over the world.
“Mercy Chinwo Blessed, a well-known gospel music minister, and her spouse shared images of their son and themselves on various social media channels on Friday, March 29, 2024.
However, our client was extremely disturbed, disheartened, and saddened to learn that the aforementioned suspects, acting as pranksters with the unlawful intent to damage our client’s reputation, had made a number of defamatory posts on social media, referring to our client as “the father of minister Mercy Chinwo Blessed’s son,” a woman who is not married.
Since then, Mr. Okoronkwo Ejike’s article has been very popular on the platform. Mr. Kingsley Ibeh posted a picture of our client with the message, “The real father of the baby,” in response to Mr. Okoronkwo’s post.
“Dj SpoiltKid,” a verified X user, posted a screenshot of the statement by Okoronkwo Ejike on the site “X,” which was once known as Twitter. “When are we doing DNA test?” the user asked.
“Mr. Terrence Ekot” posted the following on the platform “X” in another post: “Look at the amazing likeness between Nathaniel Bassey and Mercy Chinwo’s son. Even though the two have collaborated on a number of projects in the past, what say you?
The four people’s social media posts, according to Bassey’s attorneys, amounted to a total character assassination.
“If these suspects’ heinous actions are not dealt with right now, they will continue to damage our client’s reputation, tarnish his image, undermine his character, and undermine the good name that our client has worked so hard to establish over the years.
The attorneys claimed that the four people’s purported acts violated Sections 24(1)(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) and Sections 373 and 375 of the Criminal Code Act.
Making such comments on social media has been known to have negative effects on people’s reputations, make relationships unstable, and many people never fully recover from them. Gaining an international reputation takes time and is beneficial to the person as well as the country.
“Therefore, in the interest of justice, we implore you to use your good offices to look into this matter, apprehend, and prosecute the suspect, which will serve as a deterrent to others.”
