The Chief Medical Director of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Nnewi (NAUTH) ,Prof Joseph O. Ugboaja, OON (Ochinanwata Nnewi) was on Wednesday, 7th of February 2024 organized a commendation service of late Emeritus Prof.Okechukwu Obiora Mbonu.
The commendation service was held at the hospital quadrangle, NAUTH with all the Management team dressed in colourful regalia in honour of the late Prof Mbonu.
Ven. Obidiegwu Emmanuel,Anglican Priest,Nnewi Diocese, in his sermon which was taken from the book of Job 14:14 said that “If a man die, he shall live.
“In life,one passes many stages even when trouble comes, God always watches over his people” he stated.
Ven. Obidiegwu said that “death is inevitable, it is an appointment which must strike anytime”
He urged Christians all over the world to be prepared at all times.
The CMD of NAUTH, Prof Ugboaja in his tribute to Prof.Mbonu on behalf of management and staff of the hospital described Prof. Mbonu as an astute administrator, an accomplished academician,a man with an uncommon humility and meekness of the heart,an iroko within the health sector and architect of the modern day NAUTH.
“On a personal note,I met late Prof Mbonu sometime in 2000.I had just passed 3rd MBBS and commenced my SI lecturers” he revealed.
He said that Prof Mbonu was so friendly with them even as CMD of the hospital then.
Prof Ugboaja said that he developed personal relationship with him and had not ceased to be amazed at the OO simplicity, humility and meekness of heart.
He said that he decided to honour him with an annual lecture series as NMA Nnewi Zonal chairman because of his great deeds to the hospital.
Prof Ugboaja recognized Prof Festus Nwako,his mentor who was still alive then and he pointed that was the genesis of Prof.Festus memorial lecture, a biennial lecture series.
The CMD maintained that from this year forward, “the hospital will inaugurate Prof. Mbonu memorial lecture series in his honour”
He also disclosed that a structure at the permanent site was named after him in recognition of all he did for the hospital.
He thanked everyone who made out time to come and also appreciated those that participated in ensuring that Prof has a befitting last rites.
“The hospital will greatly miss him and as we mourn his exit ,we pray that God will grant his amiable soul an eternal rest and give us all especially the family the fortitude to bear the loss” he said
