The 16th Fulani Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has been invited by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in what appears to be an acknowledgement of his legitimacy as the legitimate emir of Kano, amidst the ongoing struggle for the throne.
This is happening after he was regarded as the heir apparent by all 44 local government areas’ district heads, commissioners, council chairmen, well-meaning Kano residents, and Nigerians. By inviting Sanusi to their current annual conference in Kano, the NBA has further recognized him as the 16th Emir of Kano.
The first NBA annual conference for the entire northern region was held at the Amani Event Centre in Kano. Attendees included Chief Judge of Kano State, Justice Dije Aboki, NBA President Yakubu Maikyau, SAN, and President of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Benedict Bakwaph Kanyip.
The NBA formally invited Emir Sanusi to not only attend but also to give his royal approval and address the attendees due to the importance of this event. Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero was not invited by the NBA as they acknowledged that the new Kano chieftaincy legislation 2024 had overthrown the 15th emir.
Due to the organized labor unions’ strike action, the case that was scheduled to be heard at the federal supreme court yesterday was postponed. Speaking at the NBA conference through his agent Mahe Bashir Wali, also known as Walin Kano, Emir Sanusi greeted the attendees with warmth and informed them of Kano’s long and distinguished history as the northern region’s commercial and cultural hub.
The monarch said the theme of the conference, ‘Administration of Justice in Nigeria: Challenges and Reforms,’ was suitable, as it was only when there is justice in the nation that society can have peace, which is a necessity for growth and development.
Engineer Abba Kabir Yusuf, the state governor, saw it as an excellent chance to confront the NBA members on the inconsistent court rulings regarding the Kano emirate dispute, even though the subject is solely a matter of state law.
The governor instructed the attorneys to always tell their clients the truth when they bring a bad case, even when the truth is bitter, rather than insisting on satisfying their clients by doing what is not permitted by law. The governor was represented at the conference by Abdullahi Bappa Bichi, Secretary to the State Government (SSG).
The Governor stated that we need to respect the rule of law and implement extensive judicial reforms in order to address the issues facing Nigeria’s justice system.
Barr O.M. Femi, speaking to journalists about the ongoing emirate dispute, stated that while the NBA is aware of what is going on, “it is good that the court is to decide, so that none of the parties involved will be aggrieved again.
The ruling will set a precedent for lawyers and judges on such matters.” Nevertheless, he added, “you don’t need to be told or wear binoculars to see that His Royal Majesty Muhammadu Sanusi II is the current Emir of Kano.
Nothing explains this fact more than what could be deduced from the ongoing NBA’s annual conference, which Muhammadu Sanusi II attends by proxy. The recognition accorded him by the legal practitioners of our land tells it all.”
NBA President Maikyau, Chief Justice Dije Aboki Kano, SSG To Kano, Abdullahi Baffa Bichi, and Mahe Bashir Wali Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II is being represented by The Walin Kano during the current NBA Conference being held in Kano.
