The release of Kelvin Okorie, a lawyer from Port Harcourt who has been detained since September 2024, has been verified by Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, President of the Nigerian Bar Association, or NBA.
After the NBA directly intervened, Okorie, who had been detained by the Nigerian Navy at first, was moved to the Nigerian Police Force on Friday.
The NBA President said in a statement that Okorie was welcomed by the association’s members in Abuja on Monday following his release.
Okorie’s “visit was an opportunity to express gratitude for the Association’s efforts in securing his freedom,” according to the NBA president.
On January 7, 2025, the NBA, led by me, spoke with General C.G. Musa, the Chief of Defense Staff, directly to request Mr. Okorie’s release.
His release on January 11, 2025, followed his transfer from military prison to the Nigerian Police as a result of this action.
In our meeting, Mr. Okorie recounted his experiences and reaffirmed his dedication to becoming involved in Bar events. His determination emphasizes how crucial cooperation and alertness are in our line of work.
