“The illegal harvest and trade of kidneys in the territory and its environs” has been denounced by the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Garki Branch, Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja.
The FCT and Nasarawa State were the subject of an illicit organ harvesting claim that surfaced earlier this week.
Obioma Ezenwobodo, the branch chairman, responded by saying that the branch had instructed its Health and Medical Committee to monitor the ongoing legal proceedings brought by parties involved in the case and to make sure that justice was done.
In addition, he added that the branch had urged relevant government authorities and professional groups to act diligently to halt the unsavory trend by sanitizing and implementing stringent regulations for organ transplants. He claimed that the association had provided pro bono legal assistance for victims.
It referred to the illicit kidney trade and harvesting as murky, brutal, inhumane, and against Section 54 of the National Health Act, which forbade the sale or exchange of human organs.
