According to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency’s (NDLEA) Oyo State Command, 417 people were detained in 2023 for a variety of drug-related offenses.
Additionally, the command reported that from January to December 2023, 54 convictions were obtained.
In an interview with NAN in Ibadan on Tuesday, Olayinka Joe-Fadile, the state’s NDLEA Commander, disclosed this.
Joe-Fadile reported that during the period under review, the suspects—340 men and 77 women—were apprehended for trafficking in Cannabis sativa, Tramadol, Diazepam, Colorado, and other psychiatric compounds.
He stated that during the year under review, the command had captured eight tonnes of various narcotic and psychotropic substances worth at N135.6 million.
He added that out of the 91 defendants the command had charged in court, 54 had been found guilty of various drug-related offenses and were facing terms ranging from six months to ten years in prison.
“The command provided 246 drug-using individuals—205 men and 41 women—with brief intervention through counseling.
During the evaluation period, thirteen individuals received rehabilitation and were reintegrated into society.
The NDLEA commander stated, “Efforts are underway to equip and repurpose the acquired facility in Iseyin as a standard rehabilitation center for counseling and rehabilitation.”
