The 25 councils have been given a mandate by the Niger State House of Assembly’s Standing Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to carry out initiatives that would directly benefit the populace.
The appeal was made at the beginning of the committee’s oversight tour to local governments in the state by the chairman of the House Standing Committee on LG, Hon. Dr. Bello Alhaji Bako, Member, Rijau Constituency.
Bako informed the LG leaders that the purpose of the monitoring visit was to assess the degree of compliance with the local government appropriation legislation rather than to conduct a witch hunt.
Then he urged the council chairs to carry out initiatives that directly advance the socioeconomic advancement of the populace.
Members of the Committee visited Mashegu, Magama, Rijau, Mariga, and Kontagora, among other Council Areas in Zone C.
The Committee examined and inquired about the total amount of net allocations made to the councils as of January 2023 and the entire amount of internal revenue that the council has earned as of January 2023.
Additional materials include the project files and designs that the council completed during the review period, the contractors’ certificate of incorporation and due process certificate, proof that the contracts were registered with the councils, and the Finance and General Purpose Committee Minutes (F&GPC) of the meetings, among other things.
The committee members were thanked for their visit by the chairmen of the several LGs in the zone, who also gave them their word that they would take the necessary action.
Additionally, they stated that they were always willing to work with the committee to guarantee the socioeconomic advancement of the councils.
Alhassan Isah (Mashegu), Mohammed Garba (Agwara), Murtala Adamu Badaru (Suleja), Abubakar Suleiman Gomna (Bosso), and Engr. Mohammed Alhaji Haruna (Bida South) are among the committee members.
